Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How energy efficient is a heat pump?Heat Pump Systems can be over five times as energy efficient as the most efficient gas or oil boiler. Instead of burning a fuel and producing the associated emissions they simply move energy that already exists, stored solar energy. If you compare their performance against solar panels fitted to roofs, Ground Source Heat Pumps produce over six times more renewable energy. This is because they provide central heating whereas solar panels can't.
  2. Can I put the system in an old building?Yes. We have installed systems that are working effectively in all types of building. More engineering design is required for older and complex buildings than new.
  3. Do they make much noise? No, they hum like a large refrigerator. The units we supply have had many years of research and development that has included major noise and vibration reduction.
  4. Can I get enough hot water for my baths and showers? With the correct design and equipment all of your domestic hot water will be provided by the heat pump throughout the year. This is standard for the equipment we supply. Instead of water that may scald you the produced water is hot enough for all of your normal requirements. You will notice that you do not have to add as much cold water to your baths and showers. The aim is to save money and energy with our systems. There is no point in taking water to temperatures that can't be used anyway.
  5. Where should I put my heat pump? For geo-thermal and exhaust air heat pumps either in your utility room, basement or even out in the garage. Air to water pumps need to be located outdoors, at least 500mm away from a wall.
  6. How much loop will I need in the ground? That depends on the energy requirements of your building, where you are in the country and the type of ground you have. This will come from the specialised design work we will carry out as part of your project. However, the larger the building generally means more energy is required thus more loop in the ground.
  7. Can I use under-floor heating with a heat pump? You can use under-floor, radiators or a mix of both for heat distribution in your building. In commercial buildings air distributed systems can also be used.
  8. Can I heat my swimming pool?Yes. We can design a system purely for your indoor or outdoor pool or integrate it with a heating and hot water system for the whole of your property.
  9. Will it save money?Yes it will against all fuels including natural gas. The amounts depend on how well your system is designed. With new buildings it is very easy to evaluate.
  10. Can I get cooling from my system?Yes. You can achieve passive and active cooling from one of our systems. Our Heat Pumps have a clever system that will take the heat from your building and warm your hot water up during the summer months.
  11. Will it keep the house warm on the coldest days in winter?Yes it will. Thousands of these systems have been installed for many years in some of the most northern parts of Scandinavia where the winters are very hard and long. We will design the system so that it provides enough energy for your house.
